Angelo State University’s Jazz Ensembles program will host a holiday concert featuring big band performances of favorite Christmas songs on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Brooks & Bates Theatre at the San Angelo Performing Arts Center, 82 Gillis St. in downtown San Angelo.

About the event

Titled  “Have a Swingin’ Christmas,” the concert will feature performances by  ASU Big Band 1 and ASU Big Band 2, and it is free and open to the  public. Each of the bands is made of up about 20 student musicians  performing on saxophones, trumpets, trombones and tuba, as well as a  full rhythm section.

The ASU Big Band 1 will perform:

• “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” • “Sugar Rum Cherry” • “Christmas – The Joy & Spirit” • “Let it Snow!” with vocals • “Blue Christmas” with vocals • “Frosty the Snowman” with vocals • “Tank”

The ASU Big Band 2 will perform:

• “Have a Swingin’ Christmas” • “Big Band Christmas” • “Big Band Christmas II” • “Christmas Time is Here” • “Feliz Navidad” • “O Christmas Tree”

The  ASU Jazz Ensembles program offers diverse and creative, small- and  large-group jazz performance experiences. It covers a wide range of  styles, including bebop, Latin jazz, free jazz, funk, hip hop and many  others. ASU is proud to now have two big bands and to offer performances  in this uniquely American art form.

The Jazz Ensembles program is directed by Dr. Trent Shuey, ASU assistant director of bands.
