Percussion Studio

Applied percussion at Angelo State University, for music majors and non-majors.

The whole instrument family

The studio covers the whole instrument family: snare drum, all keyboard percussion, timpani, multiple percussion, drum set, orchestral accessories, and Latin and world percussion. Lessons emphasize orchestral performance, period-correct approaches to each piece, all keyboard percussion, multiple percussion, and jazz. Students prepare for careers in performance and music education, and the studio has a 100% placement rate for graduates in their chosen fields.

Non-majors are welcome in lessons and ensembles. Whatever you want from percussion, there is a place for you here.

Where you'll play

  • Percussion Ensemble

Two or more concerts a year plus school outreach. Recent programs include Glimmer (fall 2025) in ASU's newly renovated auditorium and House Music (spring 2026), built around John Cage's Living Room Music and Thierry De Mey's Table Music.

  • Ram Band Drumline

Every battery arrangement is written by Dr. Shuey, who has arranged percussion for more than 40 halftime shows. The line has grown from 8 members to 21 in the 2026 season.

  • Jazz Ensembles

Drummers and percussionists are needed every semester in the ASU Big Band and jazz combos.

  • Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra

Percussionists also perform with ASU's major ensembles.

  • ASU Day of Percussion

An annual event Dr. Shuey founded in 2017 that brings percussionists to campus.
