Scales and Arpeggios

Every major and harmonic minor key from the marimba skills test, with Dr. Shuey's stickings. Pick a key, then press play to hear the whole page at your tempo, one section flowing into the next, and follow along as it plays.

The order is the one on the test: chord inversions and arpeggio inversion permutations with four mallets, the scale with the inner mallets, and the arpeggio with two. Three octaves, from memory, at quarter note = 100. Draw keys picks four major and four harmonic minor keys at random, the way the panel does.

Mallets are numbered 1 to 4 from left to right: 1 and 2 in the left hand, 3 and 4 in the right. The printed packet is written out in major; the harmonic minor keys here use the same pattern and stickings, with the third and sixth lowered and the raised seventh marked.

C major

Part of the Skills Assessment Test

Four major and four harmonic minor keys are drawn, and all eight must pass. Rudiments and sight-reading make up the rest of the test.
